Trekking in Nepal 2000

In November, 2000, I had the opportunity to spend a month in Nepal. Two weeks were spent trekking from Lukla to Everest Basecamp, within the Khumbu Valley. Four days on either end were spent touring Kathmandu and surrounding areas including both Swayambunath and Bodanath stupas, Dubra square, and the streets, bars and restaurants of Thamel where many of the great mountaineers have walked.

November 6-7, 2000 - Site-seeing in Kathmandu including Swayambunath, Bodanath, Dubra square

November 8, 2000 - Departure from Kathmandhu (4000 ft) to Lukla (9600 ft), beginning of trek, night spent in Phakding (8600 ft)

November 9, 2000 - Phakding (8600 ft), Chumoa, Jorsale (9000 ft), Namche Bazaar (11,050 ft); trekking mainly along the Dudh Kosi river

November 10, 2000 - Acclimatization day in Namche (11,050 ft) with short hike to Phurte and Thamo (12,700 ft)

November 11, 2000 - Visited Tibetan market in Namche, trekked to Syangboche (12,300 ft) and Everest View Hotel (12,700 ft); further trekking to Khumjung (12,500 ft)

November 16, 2000 - Dughla (15,300 ft) to Loboche (16,200 ft) and back to Dughla (altitude sickness got the best of me)

November 17, 2000 - Dughla (15,300 ft) to Pheriche (14,400 ft) and Himalayan Rescue Association medical clinic

November 19, 2000 - Pheriche (14,400 ft) to Tengboche monastery (12,700 ft), to Phunki Tenga (10,700 ft) to Luiysasa
